Why Attending IMN's Women's Leadership Sessions at Real Estate Conferences is a Game-Changer
BLCP Law's Lauren Murphy shares firsthand experience of participating in the dedicated women's session IMN includes in event programming. Plus, why to be excited for upcoming leading industry event: IMN's Winter Forum on Real Estate Opportunity and Private Fund Investing, January 22-24, Laguna Beach, CA - REGISTER

What value have you gained, or enjoyment found, from attending the Laguna Forum women’s sessions?

It’s great to see the increased camaraderie among the women attending the conference. Engagement continues to grow, creating an even greater impact. The interactive roundtable sessions, which are open to all, address topics such as the real estate glass ceiling, disparity in women holding equity positions in the corporate environment, along with other topics that leave attendees feeling empowered and supported. The sessions have shaped a community and opened doors for these types of discussions.

Have you experienced firsthand benefits of being a mentee or a mentor?

In an industry dominated by men, it can often be intimidating to look across a room and see nothing but suits. A former colleague, head of real estate at an AmLaw100 firm, gave me some sound advice. She told me that you don’t need to be the loudest person or the most talkative, but when you feel compelled to speak, be direct and be sure to get your message across. It’s often the individuals that don’t always need to command a room that people listen to, because when they do speak up people pay attention and are engaged. One other piece of advice, when you go into a meeting you may have five things to get across, but if you walk away with one question answered or one point made it was a successful meeting. Her advice resonated with me and has stuck with me to this day. Command a room in your own way to shine and stand out.

What are you most looking forward to about the conference?

With so much uncertainty the past few years, I’m eager to join industry peers and discuss upcoming trends and economic forecasts. Common themes that have emerged from chatter in the market include interest rates and financing costs, economic volatility, regulatory shifts, local and federal government’s focus on sustainable building practices and more efficient land use, shortage of affordable housing with high construction and borrowing costs, hybrid work trends adversely impacting office real estate, among others that continue to influence investment decisions. It will be great to hear from and connect with key real estate stakeholders and thought leaders on these topics.
