No Need to Hit Shmooze on Networking

No Need to Hit Shmooze on Networking - Networking Tips

Why is it walking into conference networking sessions can sometimes feel like being back in the school playground, and everyone’s already got someone to hang out with? Here are eight steppingstones to make your way around the playground, and who knows? You might even come to enjoy it.

1. THE EARLY BIRD CATCHES THE WORM

Networking doesn’t have to rely on mustering conversation at the scheduled happy hour. Download the IMN events app, see who’s attending, and reach out ahead of the conference. By starting early, you can arrange to meet someone at the event. What sessions are they going to? Great same – see you there. By having a handful – or even one person – you’ve already connected with you’ll feel more at ease heading in.

2. OLDIES BUT GOLDIES

In the same breath, the conference doesn’t always have to be about making new connections but catching up with those you’ve previously been introduced to. The conference can be a good reason to reach back out to a former peer you’ve met: are they going to the conference again? Are they still looking for deals in xyz? They likely will also appreciate a familiar face as they return to the sea of people.

3. LET’S GET VISIBLE

If you know your stuff, get in touch with the conference producer to speak on a panel. Immediately, you’re connected with your fellow panelists. Plus, by talking on stage speakers often get approached afterwards regarding what they discussed.

4. SMALL BUT MIGHTY

If the networking playground seems a bit too vast then no worries, start small: attend the small group meetings. Yes, it’s in the name, these are smaller – interactive sessions – to share professional stories, guidance for fellow peers, as well as a strategic business focus to help the wider ecosystem. These offstage candid group meets are the ideal bridge into wider conference conversing.

5. TAKE THE LEAD

You heard that right. Make your own dinner reservation, say 6 – 8 people, and invite those you are looking to connect with along. They’ll meet fellow interesting people at the dinner, and plans are secured for you and others.

6. DON’T BE SHY OF A LITTLE SELF-PROMOTION

You’ve already taken yourself into the networking sphere so you’re halfway there! Now make it worth it, give yourself a little shoutout where it makes sense. People are looking to hear how you can help them, so let them know just that.

7. FRIENDLY FACES AT THE EXHIBIT BOOTHS

See those people sat at their booth tables in the exhibit hall? They’re there to chat and meet fellow conference delegates. Head on over, introduce yourself, learn about their work also – it’s a two-way street and maybe you in fact need their services without even realizing. Chances are you’ll make a connection, and at the very least get a free pen.

8. DON’T FORGET THE FOLLOW-UP

The follow up may be even more important than the initial conversation. Don’t wait too long, a couple of days within the conference concluding works best. You opened the window so get in there before it shuts.

Well, there you have it, some networking nuggets to capitalize on your next conference. Ultimately, people are at conferences to connect and make deals, lest we forget real estate is a people business. May as well introduce yourself to some people.
